Build a Home Defense Plan

A written plan reduces improvisation. Keep it simple enough that every household member can understand their role.

1. Define communication

Decide who contacts emergency services, which contacts should be notified, and what household members should do if separated.

2. Identify safer locations and exits

Consider where household members can move away from a hazard and which exits are usable. Different emergencies can require different choices.

3. Account for everyone

Include children, visitors, pets, mobility limitations, medication needs and anyone who may need assistance.

4. Practice calmly

Review the plan periodically and after major household changes. For active emergencies, follow instructions from emergency services and relevant authorities.
